An overview of the National Church Life Survey for Catholic Leaders

Info Session Catholic

Watch this presentation by the National Church Life Survey (NCLS) team to Catholic diocesan leaders across Australia, sharing findings from the 2021 NCLS and discussing the upcoming 2026 NCLS.

An online briefing meeting was held for Catholic Diocesan Leaders in June 2026, to help prepare for the upcoming 2026 National Church Life Survey. The recording of this meeting is now available to watch anytime.

In this briefing, Prof Ruth Powell, the Director of NCLS Research with 35 years of experience, presents key data showing the Catholic Church's demographic profile, including its high level of education (41% with university degrees compared to 31% nationally), significant multicultural makeup (51% non-English speaking background), and recovery from COVID-related attendance patterns back to 92% of pre-pandemic levels.

Daniel Ang from the Sydney Centre of Evangelisation shares how the survey data helps parishes move beyond surface-level problems to address deeper issues of connection and belonging, while Josh from Bathurst Diocese describes their diocese's comprehensive engagement with the survey and use of results to inform parish assemblies and planning.

The presentation outlines the three types of surveys on offer: Church Activities Survey (for one administrator), Church Life Survey (for church attenders- both adult and children), and Leader Survey. It explains pricing options for participation, with the NCLS Research team offering flexibility for dioceses unable to participate in 2026, by allowing deferral to 2027.
